  • Water Pollution is when bodies of water are contaminated by chemicals or microorganisms which can be harmful to humans and the environment.

  • Water pollution is caused by many factors including when sediment from farms is washed into lakes, when acid runoff from mines gets into surface water, and factories when chemical spills take place.
  • What are the Effects of Water Pollution
  • Categories of water pollution are groundwater, surface water, ocean water, point source, nonpoint source, and transboundary. Different pollutants of these categories are landfills, fertilizer runoff, oil spills, or stormwater runoff.
  • What Can You Do to Prevent Water Pollution
  • The most common ways water is contaminated is by agriculture such as nutrients going into waterways and creating algae blooms. Another is sewage and wastewater which can harm us and marine life. Oil pollution destroys habitats and marine life and radioactive substances which can create health problems.
  • For humans, water pollution can lead to death or cause diseases like cholera, giardia, Legionnaires’ disease, and typhoid. It can also cause less serious problems like skin rashes, pinkeye, respiratory infections, and hepatitis. In the environment, it creates dead zones, affects an organism's life span or its ability to reproduce, and an impact on the nervous system . It can also lead to death.
  • To prevent water pollution you can speak out on the ways it affects the planet. You can also use less plastic and reuse and recycle materials. Make sure you dispose of cleaning products and oils correctly so they won't go down the drain and you can make sure your car does not leak contaminants. Maintain a yard that reduces runoff and avoid pesticides and herbicides.
