Storyboard Text

  • The First Opium War occurred during 1839-1842. China and Britain clashed over the trade of opium. The British were importing it from India and exporting it to China. China wanted to stop the trade of opium with the British because their citizens were becoming addicted.
  • These are the poppy plants in which opium comes from.
  • Trade of opium started to become popular in 1820. It became a widespread addiction that caused health, economic and social problems. Lin Zexo was one of the people that helped China resist from the British.

  • This has gone too far!
  • The Chinese government destroyed 20,000 chests of opium that was traded from British merchants. But the British and the Chinese hatred towards one another increased after two sailors stabbed a Chinese villager while they were drunk.

  • The British army went to the Pearl River and attacked and took the city. The Chinese attacked the British as revenge in 1842. The British then captured Nanjing in August of that year which caused the end to their fighting.
  • PEARL RIVER
  • The British forced the Chinese to sign the Treaty of Nanjing. This gave Britain the city of Hong Kong and plenty of trade ports that were used by the Chinese. Britain was granted with the status of the most favored-nation and other countries demanded the same treatment.

  • That was not last war between China and Britain. There was a Second Opium War after the First Opium War which involved France. It lasted from 1856-1860.
