- Document written by Thomas Jefferson declaring independence from the U.S to Great Britain. Signed by the representatives of the thirteen colonies.
- Declaration of Independence
- The first official constitution in the U.S., ratified in 1781. It provided a system for the colonies by giving the central government no power over the states or citizens.
- Articles of Confederation
- A large assembly containing of US statesmen that drafted the United States Constitution in 1787
- Constitutional Convention
- An agreement between large and smaller states that disagreed with the legislative structure and representation of each state.
- Connecticut Compromise
- The US government would be divided in to three sectors executive,legislative, and judicial.

- Run by the Supreme Court, its powers include interpreting the constitution and examining cases that involve states’ rights.
