Dave Conroy, a man who works in the trapping industry, is skiing to Hoodoo Cabin.
As he was skiing along, he was exhausted and "...that tree like a strong and lonely woman, called his weary body to stop."
"the ice broke beneath him.... with a low muffled reverberation, startling as if the river spoke."
Though he was wet, cold and tired, he kept going and he was determined to get the cabin.
When he finally arrived to the spot where the cabin had been, Dave remembered that the cabin had been burnt down in a fire. Now he was regretting his decisions of not stopping to warm himself up after falling in the air hole.
'He bit his fingers. They were cold and white and unresponsive as a dead man's."
Then he remembered something, one of his friends MacMoran had a cabin 10 miles away. But he was to weak and tired to go.
So he decided to take a rest. "Conroy paused a moment, leaned against a snow bank, sank down into it and rested."
When he woke up from his rest, he had seen something he hadn't noticed before, "...a cottage...a white cottage, low-roofed, with green trees beside it and an open door." However, this was just a vision. Not real.
Dave was convinced that someone would come and find him; "Macdonald, MacMoran, someone come and get him.
He decided that he would lie awhile and wait. "The world was growing small, dying slowly in the darkness of the sunlight."
