- In the beginning of the novel Esperanza and her family move to Mango Street in Chicago. Even though the house is nicer than their previous one, it does not meet Esperanza's desires.
- Climax

- Esperanza is having trouble with finding out who she is as a person and sees women living on her street that are being treated bad and are being abused. She makes two new friends that help her, Lucy and Rachel.
- Falling Action
- Esperanza's has to get a job to pay for expenses but one day at work a man asked her to give him a kiss and she said "ok," but the man grabbed her and kissed her on the lips. Esperanza later meets Sally, who becomes her new "bad girl" friend
- Conclusion
- I want to be an independent woman and have a nice place of my own
- In the climax, Esperanza goes to the carnival with her new friend Sally and they run into some of Sally's guy friends. This leads to Esperanza getting sexually assaulted at the carnival.
- Hey, you are Sally's friend right?
- Umm, yes
- Esperanza accepts that she belongs of Mango Street. She also becomes friendlier with the people living on her street.
- Hey, maybe it is not so bad here after all
- In the resolution, Esperanza desires in the future to become a writer and live in a nice house.
