- On April 9, 1865 in Appomattox County, Virginia after 4 years of fighting , Robert E. Lee surrendered his to General Ulysses S. Grant. However fighting continued in Texas until the middle of May. Was important because it ended the war and preserved the Union.

- On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre. It was just 5 days after the Confederates surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse.
