  • Fort Sumter
  • On April 12, 1861, the Union garrison traveled to South Carolina in an attempt to get Fort Sumner from the Conferderate Army. After 34 hours the Union realized that the situation was hopeless so they surrendered, however no one died. This battle was important because it gave the Confederate their first win and it was the first battle of the Civil War.

  • On September 17, 1862 the confederate general Robert E. Lee decided to go to Sharpsburg, Maryland and invade the Union in order to try and get supplies and support. This battle was important because it was the bloodiest one day battle in the history of the U.S, it gave the Union more reason to fight and allowed Abraham Lincoln to pass the Emancipation Proclomation

  • From July 1st-3rd, General Lee decided to invade the Union at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to get more supplies and put pressure on Abraham Lincoln. After 50,000 casualties, the Confederate surrendered back south. The battle was important because it was the turning point of the war for the Union.

  • On January 1st, 1863 Abraham Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation. This was important because it was the start of ending slavery since it freed all the slaves in the Confederate states.

  • On November 19, 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave a speech at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This was important because he tried to tell the public to honor the dead by continuing to fight for human equality, the preservation of the Union.

  • From May 18 - July 4, 1863, the Union led a 47 day siege on the Confederates at Vicksburg, Mississippi.This was important because when the Confederates surrendered it gave the Union complete control over the Mississippi River and cut the Conferderacy in half.
