  • PART 10 OF THE BIO STUDY SEGMENTS:CELLULAR RESPIRATION!
  • Lets start with the definition!!
  • Hey everyone! today we are learning about a process called cellular respiration
  • Now if you look up here you can see that cellular respiration is how cells create energy using glucose and oxygen, which also happen to be the products of photosynthesis
  • C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
  • The process in which cells convert food into energy by using products of photosynthesis.
  • CELL RESPIRATION
  • You can also see the equation for this process at the bottom of the board....we will talk about that later
  • The process begins with glucose and oxygen and there are 3 metabolic stages in the production of ATP
  • *Pretend this is a mitochondria*
  • -Glycolysis--Krebs Cycle--ETC-
  • This organelle is called a mitochondria and is a very important part of cellular respiration since it takes those reactants and food and combines them to create ATP, which is a form of chemical energy in cell respiration
  • Here I will briefly explain each phase.
  • Glycolysis- A process of chemical reactions that splits glucose into 2 pyruvates which are then transported to the mitochondria (as previously mentioned)
  • Kreb's Cycle- A central role in the breakdown of the fuel molecules, produces carbon dioxide (and is very important for the next step!)
  • Electron Transport Chain- The final phase where a majority of ATP gets produced and preserved, electrons flow into the the oxygen , lowering energy in them
  • Now to finish it off let us go back to that equation from earlier
  • The equation on the left of the arrow are called reactants and those are what go in, if you know about photosynthesis you will notice the reactants are the products of photosynthesis so both processes work hand in hand!
  • C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
  • ATP
  • The ones to the right of the arrow are our products. In this case we have the formulas for Carbon Di. and Water, also remember that ATP has been produced
  • So next time you eat your favorite foods think about the cellular respiration that takes place inside your body :)
  • And that's what we have for you guys today! Tune in tomorrow for a segment about photosynthesis. And remember that knowledge is power!
