Narcissus is born from the loveliest of the nymphs. If he were to live a long life, a prophecy forewarned that he "not discover himself."
A nymph, Echo, angers Juno, queen of the gods, who punishes her. As punishment, Echo could only repeat the last of what is spoken and return what she hears.
Echo sees Narcissus and falls in love. Narcissus rejects her and scorned, Echo wastes away until only her voice remains.
Narcissus comes across a spring and quenches his thirst. Peering into the water, he is entranced by his own reflection. When he reaches out to embrace his image, it disappears.
Saddened, Narcissus wastes away from unrequited love. Upon his last words, he said "Goodbye" in Latin, and all Echo could do was echo back, "valē."
His sister Naiads and brother Dryads mourned Narcissus and instead of a body, they came upon a flower with white pedals surrounded by a yellow heart.
