" He shinned excitedly up a tree and looked back. His pursuers had stopped. But the hope that was in Rainsfords brain when he climbed he died for he saw in the shallow valley that gneral zaroff was still on his feet."
" I will not lose my nerve. I will not."
Rainsford seems anxious because in the text he repeats over and over again to himself that he will not loose his nerve, which shows us that he is trying to stay calm and since he general left him in the tree he needed to relax and make a plan to try and win the fight for his own life.
" As he stepped forward, his foot sank into ooze. He tried to wrench it back, but the musk suck visiously at his foot as if it were a giant leech."
Rainsford seem hopeless because as Zaroff was walking away he had stepped into " death swamp quick sand." It was also dark outside and he was vigorously trying to get his foot out of this leech like sand that wouldn't let him go. If he had took to much time trying to get out of this quick sand it could take the chance of Zaroff seeing him and killing him while he is stuck.
Rainsford was disappointed because he had got excited that Zaroff died, but later comes to find out it was only the dog in the tiger trap and Zaroff was still alive and Rainsford still had to fight.
" They would be on him any minute now. His mind worked frantically. He worked frantically. He thought of a native trick he had learned in Uganda. He slid down the tree. He caught hold of a springy young sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife, with the blade pointing down the trail."
