  • ELECTION OF 1824 John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson were the 2 candidates of the Election of 1824. Andrew Jackson got the most popular votes, but didn't win majority of electoral votes.  Henry Clay, Speaker of the House, supported Adams and Adams won. Jackson accused them of cheating.
  • Adams and Clay are CHEATING! I lost on PURPOSE! I had the most votes!!
  • *GASP*
  • SPOILS SYSTEM This is the practice of replacing government employees with the winner’s supporters. The previous government workers were furious and demanded their jobs back!

  • INDIAN REMOVAL ACT When whites discovered gold on Cherokee's lands, they moved in.The states passed laws that allowed whites to take over Native American lands. As a result, the Indians had protested. After a debate, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which called for treaties that made Native Americans relocate west.
  • TRAIL OF TEARS Federal troops forced Cherokees to move west. Over the Fall and Winter of 1838-1839, the Cherokees set out on the long, harsh journey. They went in the cold, rain, and snow without quality clothes. One-fourth of them died because of disease and starvation.
  • The Union–next to our liberty, most dear. I WILL convince South Carolina to secede if Congress forces us to pay the tariffs.

  • SOUTH CAROLINA THREATENS TO SECEDE Although Jackson opposed SC nullifying the tariffs, he did not want them to break away from the Union. Jackson lowered the tariff, but it was still high. SC threatened succession if the government collected tariffs. Jackson became enraged.

  • PANIC OF  1837 This was a financial crisis in which banks had closed and the credit system had collapsed. Because of the rise in money supply, inflation occured. Jackson ordered that people pay in gold or silver. Then, the banks ran out of gold and silver. A depression had followed.
  • CLOSED
  • ALL THE BANKS ARE CLOSED!! NONE OF THEM HAVE ANY GOLD OR SILVER LEFT!
