My name is Mahawa. I am from Fonji, Africa. I am a slave and I now live in the USA. I was sold to a small plantation owner in 1870. I wasn't the only one working slave. We would do many things to pass the time.
This is your new home.
We worked on the fields for about 15-16 hours. It was very tired, we didn't have time for ourselves. The only thing we did all day was harvesting the crops.
Dinner is ready!
Thanks! Please clean the kids, they are dirty.
If we didn't do things perfectly or completed the acceptable amount of work we got whipped and beaten. Everything was horrible, we were abused in some type of way.
I am a free women!!
There were some problems with my master, so I was sold to a new slave owner. The work was even more difficult. Although, the owner had compassion for us. He wasn't so cruel as our last one.
After some months, I became a servant. It was easier because I got to do domestic tasks. I gained my owner's respect and trust.
After many working years, I got my freedom. I have faced many obstacles as a black woman in America. I've been working hard and I can now support myself and have a decent working life. Being a free person is even better than a slave. We all have rights!
