  • To Build A Fire
  • The Begging Of a Journey
  • The First Fire
  • The man was on a journey to another mining camp to meet up with other travelers. He ignored the warnings of those more experienced than him. The old-timer advised him not to go without a partner. Inexperienced as he was, he believes that he can manage whatever comes. His only companion was a large husky dog. The temperature was somewhere between 50 -75 degrees below zero.
  • A Terrible Accident
  • As they two walked through the white landscape, the man spat. As soon as it left his mouth, it instantly froze, popped, and this startled the man. He was very perceptive of everything around him. Unfortunately, he was incapable of knowing where to exactly to step, but he was managed to keep his footing and not get his feet wet.
  • Another Unfortunate Event
  • At midday, he sat down to eat. He tried, but the ice muzzle of spit stopped him from taking a bite. Laughing to himself, he realized that he didn't build a fire to warm up. When he stood up to build the fire, he noticed that he could not feel his legs or feet.
  • So Close Yet So Far
  • As he started to walk again, the most unfortunate thing happened. He plunged through the ice halfway up to his knees. He would have to rebuild the fire and dry out his feet and boots. After a while, he had the fire going again. He acknowledges that if he doesn't dry out his feet, he will lose them. Running will only make it worse. He assumes that he is safe because the fire is blazing. Then tragedy hits...
  • He had built the fire under a tree! One of the limbs drops all of its snow on top of the fire and puts it out. He then concludes that maybe the old-timer knew what he was talking about. Hurrying to rebuild the fire, he tries to collect more firewood. His hands have lost all feeling. After many attempts, he lights the entire bunch of matches and with no feelings in his hands, drops them into the snow. Frantic, he looks at the dog and thinks that if he kills the dog, he could warm himself in the insides of the dog. The dog knows and doesn't trust the man. The man knows that it is expected that he will not survive.

  • The dog sees the man and wonders why there is no fire. He looks at the man and waits, but there is no response from him. The dog whimpered loudly and crawled closer. He sniffed the scent of death. The dog turns toward the trail and in the direction of the camp and fire. The man was so close yet so far.
