  • John Adams and the Corrupt Bargain

  • Jackson thought that Adams won against him because he was rich and white, because even though Jackson had the majority of the votes, Adams won when it went to congress, in the election of 1824
  • South Carolina Nullification
  • Jackson was elected for his first presidential term in 1828, and he was known as the common man's president
  • Worcester V. Georgia
  • In 1828 the federal government raised the tariff on imported goods angering the south. The north was all for it since they mostly manufactured goods, but the tariffs hurt the south since the relied on imported goods.
  • Trail of Tears
  • South Carolina nullified the tariffs and even threatened to secede from the country. Eventually the government and the state came to a compromise.
  • A court case that took place in 1830 between Georgia and a missionary/the Cherokee Indians about whether or not they could stay in Georgia, in the end the court ruled in favor of the Cherokee.
  • Jackson ignored the ruling of the court and forced the Indians to leave Georgia in 1836, onto what is now known as the Trail of Tears. Many Native Americans died while on the Trail of Tears
