- Estrella Notices the Old Barn
- This old barn is cool but weird.
- Petra is Depressed & Estrella Bangs on the Quaker Oats
- It's ok Perla and Cookie, don't cry.
- I am so stressed. I really need a break.
- Perfecto's Red Toolbox
- This is a hammer and this is a nail.
- "The barn seemed so strangely vacant; the absence clung heavy and the wind whistled between the planks. She noticed a chain suspended from the ceiling. Thick-linked, long and rusty. it swayed like a pendulum, as if someone had just touched it and ran off," (pg.10).
- Alejo Sees Estrella in the River
- I really hope she doesn't see me!
- "The twins started to cry and for a moment Estrella's eyes narrowed until Petra saw her headlock the Quaker man's paperboard head like a hollow drum and the twins stuffed their runny noses... Estrella danced like a loca around the room...," (pg.19).
- Estrella Picks Grapes in the Field

- "But Alejo risked climbing onto a thinner and weaker branch to see farther down the canal of cool water. The girl squatted by the edge of the irrigation ditch, and cupped water to clean the mud off a watermelon. He saw her when they were about to call it quits for the night," (pg.38).
- "Carrying the full basket to the paper was not like the picture on the red raisin boxes Estrella saw in the markets, not like the women wearing a fluffy bonnet, holding out the grapes with her smiling, ruby lips, the sun a flat orange behind her," (pg.49).
- This is nothing like the raisin box.
- "Alejo had not guessed the biplane was so close until its gray shadow crossed over him like a crucifix, and he ducked into the leaves. The biplane circled, banking steeply over the trees and then released the shower of white pesticide," (pg.76).
