- After Adeline was born her mother died. Adeline's older siblings blame her for their mothers death and bully her for this. The rest of Adeline's family treats her poorly, but Yeye and aunt Baba treats Adeline different from the rest of the family.

- Father married a seventeen year old girl, they call Niang and had two children together. Niang treats Adeline and her older siblings bad and cares more for her two young children than them.
- We hate you!
- School is the only place Adeline likes to be, she is respected and treated kindly by her classmates. and has made many friends there. Adeline earns medals for being at the top of her class and is also elected for class president.

- Adeline's classmates surprise her at her house for winning the class election. Niang and father are mad that Adeline's friends came to their house making noise, Niang also won't listen to Adeline and thinks she planned the whole thing and slaps her in the face.

- Father and Niang sends Adeline to a boarding school in Tianjin (where communist are taking charge and people are leaving instead of coming), to separate her from Aunt Baba, and is left all alone in the school. Niang's sister comes to pick up Adeline and her family shows her kindness.
- Adeline enters the playwriting competition and wins first prize and her father then sends her to England to study medicine and become a doctor.
