Storyboard Text

  • Douglass tries to sneak into the plantation, but is seen by Covey who chases him into the cornstalks, their sweet smell surrounding him. Douglass manages to escape but realizes he can’t survive on his own and decides to travel back to the plantation. On his way back to the plantation, Douglass meets another slave by the name of Sandy Jenkins who lived nearby. “That is a troubling situation” replies Sandy after Douglass explains the problem.“I have a solution, go back into the forest and dig up a specific root, it will help you” says Sandy.“How will a root help me?” wonders Douglass.“It will do you no harm, why not bring it?” says Sandy. Douglass then decides to travel back to the plantation, through the forest again.
  • When Douglass arrives back at the plantation, Covey greets him kindly and tells him to herd pigs into a lot, Douglass is astonished, his mouth gaping in awe at Covey’s kindness, Douglass reluctantly does what he is told. The next day in the early morning, the sky a beautiful blue, Douglass is working when Covey comes and attempts to tie him. Douglass finds Courage and seizes Covey by the throat,“Do you intend to persist your resistance?” asks Covey.“I do,” replies Douglass. The slaves watch in disbelief as the two men continue to fight, Douglass wins as Covey is too tired to continue. From that point on Douglass was never whipped again by Mr. Covey.
  • After the fight, Douglass felt braver and stronger, his spirit now restless for freedom and equality. Covey never beat Douglass or yelled at him. Douglass then vowed to always fight back and defend himself from slave owners. Frederick Douglass later went to inspire other slaves to join him and to fight against slavery. These events gave Frederick Douglass a desire to be free, and to free others.
