- How does the character look?
- In the text it says, "he would have been marveled at the sight of  his great- great- granddaughters..creamy skin. hazel eyes, and wavy hair." (Bennett 6) This quote is describing how Stella looks. This is a view and how other people view her, and many people are marveled on her beauty.
- In the text it says, "I don't want to play with a n*gger... She guided her daughter back across the street..she grabbed Kennedy and slapped her". (Bennet 199) Stella dislikes black people.  the story its seen in many different ways, and in this situation its through her daughter. Stellas hatred for black people is shown through Kennedy, because now she is influenced by her mom the say slurs to other black people.

- In the text, it says, " Early tracked Stella Vignes until she was no longer Stella Vignes. She'd been Stella Vignes in New Orleans and Boston, then the trail ran cold..." (Bennet 94) After the twins ran away everyone is wondering where Stella is at. She was nowhere to be found. Later Early found her and he found out that she was alive and well, but it was no longer Stella. She completely changed who she was.
- What does the character love?
- In the text, it says, "She wanted to go to college someday and of course, she'd get into Spelman or Howard or wherever she wanted to go.... she hasn't accepted the job because she was worried about. money. Shed just chosen her brain over her heart..." (Bennet 10, 225) One thing Stella loves is education. Ever since she was young she always loved to learn. She always was drawn to learning new things. Her dream got ruined because her mother needed her to work. She soon got older and found her passion for wanted to go back to school, besides the unsupportiveness from her husband she still chose to do what she loved.
- What does the character think about?
- What is something the character cannot do?
- In the text, it says, "She hadn't realized how long it takes to become somebody else, or how lonely it can be living in a world not meant for you. (Bennet 169) One thing Stella cant do is accept herself. She cannot accept her true identity. That is one thing she struggles with her whole life. She cant accept her true self, so she puts on this fake front, and is trying to be someone shes not. That is why she cannot be truly happy because she is not being herself.
- In the text, it says, "When she first past over, it seemed so easy that she couldn't believe she'd never done it before..She felt almost angry at her parents for denying it to her...she couldn't understand why her parents hadn't done it" (Bennet 169) One thing Stella thinks about often is why her family, and not just her family, people in general just wont pass for white if they have the opportunity. She often wishes she passes earlier that way her life would have been easier.
