Whitney and Rainsford are on a yacht, when Whitney tells Rainford about the mysterious island. Rainsford claims he doesn't see anything, not really fazed, and Whitney tells him he has a 'good eye.'
Rainsford loses his balance when he leans over the rail and goes plunging into the sea, unable to signal the yacht that he's gone overboard, he's now stranded.
Rainsford eventually washes up on this mysterious island
Rainsford finds shelter and humans including Ivan and the general. Raisnford and the general get along well until the general admits he shoots down men which horrifies Rainsford.
After the two argue about the value of human life and whether or not it is right to shoot down men, the general hunts Rainford out in the wilderness of the island like he we was some wild aniaml, Rainford desperate to survive and not lose his nerve.
In the end, Rainsford is successful and the general ends up dead. The story is summed up by Raisnford stating that 'he's never slept in a better bed.'
