Storyboard Text

  • The slaves heard the revolutionaries changed their minds, so the slave revolts began, and Toussaint became the leader.
  • This is Toussaint. He was a slave while Napoleon was conquering the world.
  • Toussaint learned that he was more than a slave, so he taught himself to read and write. He read the enlightenment philosophers ideas and learned stuff.
  • Slave owners were furious during the french revolution when the revolutionaries were okay with ending slavery. They fought the measures, and eventually the revolutionaries gave in and changed their mind.
  • Toussaint agreed to help eject Britain and Spain. He proved himself as a great general, winning 7 battles in 7 days. He became de facto governer of the colony.
  • Napoleon was tired of Haiti in 1803, so he gave them independence. He agreed to terms of safety with Toussaint, and he invited him to a meeting with safe conduct. At Napoleons orders, they betrayed the safe conduct and arrested him. He ordered that he went to prison in the mountains and to be murdered by means of cold, starvation, and neglect. Napoleon kept him imprisoned forever, and Haiti remained free., thanks to Toussaint.
