  • “...movin‘ him to the county jail tomorrow,” Mr. Tate was saying, “I don’t look for any trouble, but I can’t guarantee there won’t be any...”. Heck Tate is moving Tom Robinson, which shows that he is presumed guilty. Atticus is asking Heck to keep Tom for one day, “Don’t be foolish, Heck,” Atticus said. “This is Maycomb.” Heck Tate is more affraid of the crowd, it makes him uneasy
  • After the group of men left the front yard, Jem asks Atticus,"They were after you weren't they?...They wanted to get you, didn't they" Jem then asks about the Ku Klux Klan. Atticus says that the KKK parade by the Jewish merchant of Maycomb, Sam Levy, at whose house they appeared one night, but Mr. Levy shamed them by telling them they had bought the white sheets they wore from his store.  He tells Jem that "the Ku Klux's gone" and it will never come back.
