The confederacy won the battle of Chancellorsville, but, some nervous soldiers shot General Stonewall thinking he was a Union soldier.
This happened in May of 1863.
General Grant called for reinforcements in the battle of shiloh on the 7th of April in 1862.
Because of this they were able to win, as well as take both sides of the Mississippi river.
They did this by marching inland eastward to launch a surprise attack on Jackson. It was successful.
On July 4 the Confederates surrendered Vicksburg. After months and months of failing to capture it, the North had successfully captured it.
On the last day the Union opened fire on the Confederates and killed or injured most of their soldiers. This resulted in a win for the Union.
The Battle of Gettysburg was a long three day battle. On July 1, the Confederacy drove the Union out of the town.
The next day, General Lee was unsuccessful in dislodging the Union army.
The Union's victories in Vicksburg and Gettysburg marked the turning point in the war.
Still, the South was determined to fight. The war would last another 2 years.
