In the beginning of this short story, a woman is described to have a large purse, elderly, and alone in the night. This lead the young teenager to believe her to be an easy target. So, he ran up to her her and attempted to get the big purse.
However, his balance was thrown off because of the combined weight of both him and the purse. This leaves him in the presence of Mrs. Jones. With the fact that he had been caught he tries to lie and say he did not mean too.
Mrs. Jones senses this is lie and instead of reporting him to the police. She drags him to her place in order for him to wash his face. She claims she would not take him in the station looking like that.
Mrs. Jones later finds out, Roger has no one at home looking after him. So, she takes it upon herself to steer him in the right direction and get him away from the path that he is on. She does this by sharing some of her own personal experiences. She also starts making dinner.
Roger tries to make up for what he did by asking to go to the store for her, staying in her sight, and behaving. However, Mrs. Jones does not need him to do anything and she trusts him to not run away. At the end, they eat together, she gives Roger $10 for his new shoes he wanted, and they part ways. They never see each other again.
