Odysseus gave the cyclops the wine he had brought along to get him drunk. The cyclops asked Odysseus' name and Odysseus replied that his name was "Nohbdy". Later, the cyclops passed out and then Odysseus and his men took a steak and drove it into his eye, blinding the creature. Then the cyclops woke up and cried in agony to the other cyclopes that Nohbdy was killing him. Which gave Odysseus exactly what he wanted.
Odysseus makes an elaborate escaape plan to hug the bottom of the monsters sheep so he can get out when they go to graze the land. Him and his men stick to the plan and end up seeing the light of day again after suffering many casualties.
Just as Odysseus and his men get back to the ship and prepare to leave, Odysseus makes the terrible mistake of shouting his real name to the cyclops boasting about his triumph. As punishment, the cyclops tells the gods to never let Odysseus see the land of Ithica again.
"Grant that Odysseus , raider of cities, never see his home"
"Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; Laertes' son, whose home's on Ithica!"
