In September 1786, Delegates came from 5 states and met in Annapolis to discuss a series of events that would lead up to a new form of government.
There were 55 delegates to the constitutional convention. Half were lawyers and the others were planters, merchants and doctors. The delegates were called founders, founding fathers, of the united states.
All of the delegates agreed they would protect peoples rights. in 1776 people thought the government was their main threat to peoples rights but by 1787 many realized they needed one. By May 25, 1787, at least two delegates from each 7 states arrived in philadelphia. With 29 delegates in attendance, the convention was officially underway.
George Washington was elected president. The conventions conversations were kept private.
On May 29, the delegates began working on the real design of the new government. The Virginia Plan is three branches of government known as legislature, judiciary, and executive.
William Paterson Presented the New Jersey Plan on June 15 as an alternative to the Virginia Plan. The New Jersey Plan gave the legislature the power to regulate trade and raise money by taxing foreign goods. The two plans were voted on on June 19. The Virginia Plan won.
