- Patriots fought for the colonists to be independent of Britain and to have their own rights. They also began

- Loyalists believed that the colonists should've stayed under Britain's rule but still fought for the patriots.
- The British were the other main party in the American Revolution that had control over the 13 colonists prior to the colonists winning the war and gaining their independence. They were often called redcoats by the colonists.
