- Mathilde was a poor beautiful woman she was born into poor family and she had no choice but to marry a clerk in the department of Education. She feels that she wax made for riches, jewelry, and fancy dresses she doesn't like the three day old table cloth and the damaged curtains she wants to live in a rich home
- "Aha! "Scotch broth"!
- Mathilde's husband got her a invitation to a ball but she cried and got depressed she said that she doesn't have any nice dresses so the husband gave her money for her to get a dress to the ball
- Once she got her dress she still wasn't happy now she wanted jewelry, her husband though she didn't need jewelry so he suggested to put flowers in her hair but she didn't want to look poor to the other woman at the ball her husband said that her friend Madame Forestier could lend her jewelry. Mathilde went to her friend and picked out the necklace she liked
- Mathilide went to her friend to borrow jewels she found a satin box and when she opened it she found a beautiful diamond necklace so she borrowed the necklace to wear to the ball
