Storyboard Text

  • Ms. Amethyst, how do forces work?
  • Well, an intelligent man named Issac Newton created three laws long ago. They define motion and forces of any objects.
  • Newton's First Law: An object won't change its state or speed of motion unless acted upon by an exterior force. This essentially means that an object will stay like it is unless something changes its amount of force.
  • This soccer ball won't move until acted upon by a force like a hand, or the wind.
  • This toy car won't stop moving until acted upon by a force like friction or a hand.
  • Newton's Second Law: An object's force is its mass (weight) multiplied by its acceleration (speed).
  • Mass
  • If you have two of the values in the equation, you can calculate the third value.
  • Speed
  • F=M*A
  • Force
  • Newton's Third Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
  • The Angle of Reflection means that any ray of light will bounce off a reflective surface like water or a mirror at the same angle it hit the surface- in other words, an equal angle in the opposite direction.
  • If you throw a ball at a wall, it will come back at you with the same amount of force.
  • I understand now! Thank you!
