  • This is our land. We will not let you have it.
  • If you do not leave from our lands, then we will take this from you through war!
  • There is no way the Romans can beat us with our strong naval fleet
  • Yeah, we are going to kill them for trying to take our land!
  • Please, Greek army we need your crew and ships to help us win this war at sea. 
  • What can we do for you our Roman allies?
  • War began between the Romans and Carthaginians because they argued over whose land the city of Messana was. Neither one of them would agree to leave the city of Messana. Therefore, the war erupted between the two armies which began the first Punic War.
  • We finally captured you Regulus
  • We will torture you now for you war crimes against the Carthaginian people
  • I will die honorably for the people of Rome
  • In the beginning of the first Punic War, the Carthaginians had a long naval tradition with a large fleet. They seemed to have an advantage over Rome because the Romans didn't have a large enough fleet to compare to the Carthaginians. Both armies knew that this battle was going to be dependent on the naval power of each army.
  • We, the Carthaginians admit defeat in the battle of Messina
  • For the loss of our men, you must pay for what you have done!
  • The Roman army quickly realizes that their naval fleet is no match for the Carthaginians. Therefore, they must ask for help from their Greek allies to provide more ships and crews for their war. While the Romans used the Greek's ships, they focused on building their own ships to use against the Carthaginian army which proved to be vital for this battle at sea. 
  • My home and my city has been destroyed from this war. How will I survive?
  • A Greek mercenary Xanthippus was able to defeat and capture the Roman consul Marcus Regulus. After capturing Regulus, the Carthaginian army tortured him and many historical accounts believe that he was tortured to death for his war crimes.
  • In the year of 241 BC, the Carthaginian commander Hamilcar admits defeat against the Romans. In exchange for peace, Romans demand that the Carthaginians must pay them 2,200 talents over ten years. In addition to peace, Romans demanded that the Carthaginians let their Roman war prisoners return safely to their towns. 
  • In the year of 241, after Hamilcar, the Carthaginian commander agrees to leave Sicily the city is left in ruins from the effects of the war. Many people lost their loved ones as they were forced to go into war no matter if they were a slave or a criminal.
