Fredrick was taken to Mr. Covey also know as the "Slave Breaker." He was known for physically, emotionally, and mentally breaking slaves.
Mr. Covey had given Fredrick a task to get wood he had chopped the day before. He had given him two ox that were not trained and he had in fact never driven a ox either. It was an unfair and dangerous situation.
Since he had never driven an ox and the oxen were unbroken hard to control, going all over the place. Fredrick feared for his life and was surprised he was still alive.
Fredrick had finally gotten the wood Mr. Covey had told him to fetch. He loaded them into the wagon and now he had gotten a little control on them and was almost at the plantation.
As soon as he got to the gates of Covey's house the oxen broken through the gate and crashed the cart. Fredrick was shocked he had worked so hard and was so close to getting it done.
Mr. Covey had come out to see what all the ruckus was about. Fredrick explained to Covey what all had happened, Covey demanded Fredrick to go back but this time he would come with.
