  • Cold War (1945-1980): Post World War II struggle for power between the United States and Russia/Western democracy and Communist bloc nations
  • - After World War II, the United States had a "red scare"- Spies gave atomic bomb secrets to Communists- This added to the public fear about the country's safety- Many protests between students and antiwar activists occurred and divided the nation
  • - Cold War lasted from 1945 to 1980- United States involvement in Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962
  • The Marshall Plan (1947): At this time, Europe was in shambles so George Marshall wanted to give money to European nations; Soviet Union refused money, fearing they would become dependent on the United States for aid
  • The Truman Doctrine (1947): President Truman asked Congress for $400 million to help Greece and France; resulted in bipartisan support from Republicans and Democrats in Congress
  • The Berlin Airlift (1948): Going against Stalin's wishes, Truman sent in U.S. planes to the city of Berlin to give citizens supplies and also prepare for war; a long-term consequence of this event was that Germany had split into two, West Germany being a U.S. ally and East Germany being a Soviet Satellite
  • So What?: The Cold War led to increased tension between the United States and other foreign countries
