All of the 85 sepoys that refused to use the cartridges were court-martialed and sentenced to jail. The British humiliated the sepoys by stripping them of their uniforms and shackling their ankles in front of 4000 other sepoys at the sentencing.
4000 sepoys were horrified by the humiliation they witnessed. They rapidly subdued the British, and the sepoys who had been imprisoned were released.
When the British troops eventually restored control, they executed thousands of sepoys and other Indians.
