  • The Rio Grande is Texas' Border!
  • NO! It's the Nueces River!
  • After the United States annexed Texas, Mexico and the United States disagreed about where the border was. The U.S. claimed it was the Rio Grande River and Mexico claimed it was the Nueces River.
  • After Mexico did not let John Slidell negotiate with Mexico, President Polk ordered Zachary Taylor and his men to occupy the area between the Nueces and Rio Grande River.
  • Mexican Soldiers were sent past the Rio Grande River and attacked the American soldiers. They wounded/killed 16 soldiers. The United States declared war on Mexico after this.
  • The United States decided to sail Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna from Cuba to Mexico in hopes that he would help make peace. This however didn't happen because Santa Anna took charge of the Mexican forces.
  • While Zachary Taylor's forces where attacking the main part of Mexico, Stephan Kearny and his men were ordered to take New Mexico and California.
  • WinField Scott and his men were ordered to capture the Veracruz seaport then march to Mexico City and capture it. General Scott was successful in his mission and ended the fighting. The United States and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty stated that the U.S. gets the territory that became New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, California, and western Colorado. The United States in turn had to pay $15 million.
