  • Rebelling and Rights:
  • In 1789, a Parisian crowd (mostly peasants) stormed medieval armory/political-prisoner prison to find weapons and killed the commanding officer.
  • The king, Louis XVI didn't release the army, so the crowd was able to take over the capital. As news of this incident spread, peasants rebelled, burned manors, and destroyed government archives containing the despised feudal dues.
  • We don't need to send the army; It'll be fine.
  • 3 weeks later, the French National Assembly abolished the feudal privileges of the First and Second Estate and declared a new age of liberty, equality, and fraternity.
  • This is a new age, my friends! One of liberty, fraternity, and equality!
  • Women Want Rights:
  • The new principles of citizenship should give us rights too!
  • In 1791, some women demanded the right to have weapons, but not equal rights. They believed women would become citizens, not by their basic right to, but by being good wives/mothers.
  • LET US BEAR ARMS!
  • In the "Declaration of Rights of Woman and Citizen", proposed by Olympe de Gouges, she proposed giving woman rights to divorce, own property in a marriage, be educated, and have public careers. However, the assembly, which was all male, didn’t listen, because they believed a “fraternity” of free MEN composed the nation.
