- After lots of fighting, America gains independence from British Rule.

- Native people deserve more rights!
- Kenyatta (Kenya)
- English Convicts were sent to Australia and they began to colonise this desolate country. Some Aboriginals were killed in order to make space for this new colony. Convicts settled here, establishing farms and homes.
- European Countries competed for their 'place in the sun' in the 'Scramble for Africa. Much wealth was available in Africa in the form of Diamonds and Gold and missionaries were keen to spread Christian ideas to African people. England won and took over large areas of South Africa.
- Portugal
- Racist attitudes and the use of force to maintain control caused unhappiness in many colonies. Individuals such as Gandhi and Kenyatta led movements to gain rights for native people.
- The often brutal Suppression of the movements led by Gandhi and Kenyatta was publicised via technological advances such as radio, photography and film and caused outrage and pressure from powerful countries like the USA.
