- John C. Calhoun believed in state rights. Calhoun loved his country but he also loved his home state of South Carolina, and supported its institution of slavery.
- Andrew Jackson saw nullification as a threat to the Union, In his view, the federal government derived its power from the people, not from the states.
- The Compromise Tariff of 1833 was proposed by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun to resolve the Nullification Crisis.
- On December 10, 1832, President Andrew Jackson issued a Proclamation to the People of South Carolina. The Compromise Tariff was eventually accepted by South Carolina and ended the Nullification Crisis.
