Since Mariam is a harami, her mother is ashamed that she is her child. Nana wishes that Mariam wasn't her daughter and that God gave her an ungrateful daughter. Mariam has to live with the feeling that her mother doesn't love her.
Mariam finally gets pregnant with Rasheed. She is so happy that she will finally please Rasheed. However, she quickly has a miscarriage and is devastated. We later find out that Mariam has six more miscarriages. Rasheed believes that Mariam's miscarriages are all her fault.
Mariam loves to cook for Rasheed because it is a time that she can please him with something. However, one night, Mariam undercooked the rice and Rasheed got very mad. Rasheed brought her outside and forced her to chew pebbles until her teeth were breaking because that is how he felt when eating her rice.
