Hi! My name is Jim and I am going to be showing you the 5 themes of geography. Let's go!
The first theme of geography I am going to tell you is place. Place is a description of the physical and human characteristics of the location being studied.
For example, I am currently in a park with hills and many animals such as squirrels and butterflies. These stupid, pesky flies are getting on my last nerve. Go away!
The second theme is Location. Location is kind of like the first step in understanding an aspect of the earth and involves providing a reference to describe where a particular place is on the earth. For example, I am in Liberty High School´s Theater. This is an absolute location.
¨Hey, get off of my stage!¨
Oops. Well, got to go!
This could be an absolute location, where a location is based on a definitive reference that rarely changes, such as latitude or longitude, or an address. Or it could be a relative location, where a place is described relative to its environment or its connection to other places.
The third theme is Human-Environment Interaction. It is the study of how humans affect the environment and how the environment affects humans. Humans can have a positive impact on the environment or a negative one.
For example, the factory behind me is producing air pollution, which is making the air contaminated and makes it hard to breathe. This is a negative impact of humans affecting the environment. *cough* *cough* I can't breathe. I need to get out of here! Curse you humans and your stupid air pollution!
The fourth theme is movement. This is when humans, goods, and ideas move from place to place on the Earth. For example, I am a human moving from place to place on a boat.
I am starting to regret taking a boat instead of the bus. I don't feel so good. I think I'm going to be sick. I will be right back. Move out of the way!
Thanks for coming with me and learning about the five themes with me. I'll see you soon! Bye!
The final theme of geography is region. A region is an area that has some physical or human characteristics. For example, you have many regions in a certain city, like Central New York.
