- Osborne and Hardy are two fellow captains in the same company. Hardy is a bit lazy and very disorganised. Osborne is known as the organised one of the two characters. He likes everything done by the book.

- Osborne
- Raleigh introduces himself and causes tension between the other officers as he looks up to Stanhope in school as a hero, as they went to the same school before the war started.

- Hi! i'm Raleigh!
- Hibbert complains about “beastly neuralgia” to Stanhope. Stanhope complains that Hibbert is acting cowardly to Osborne.
- Osborne
- aghhh!
- Osborne! Hibbert is being such a coward!
- Stanhope
- I'm going to die from neuralgia! Stanhope please help me.
- Hibbert
- Trotter uses food as his comfort to cope with the harsh reality of war. Trotter and Osborne try to avoid the war. They talk about gardening and food, showing us the contrast between war and the peaceful life before.

- When I was at my house I usually did eat, but now I eat a lot more.
- I had a great time doing gardening.
- Osborne
- Stanhope thinks that Raleigh has written he is a drinker in the letter to Raleigh’s sister. Osborne reads the letter Raleigh has written which is all positives about Stanhope.
- Probably Stanhope wrote to his sister I am a drinker.

- If you read the letter you will find out that I wrote all positives about you

- Stanhope meets the Sergeant Major about a potential attack on Thursday. They plan a meal in the evening to finalise details.

- We are going to have an attack on Thursday. I the evening we will talk about it.
