  • There are many cities located in the Indian Subcontinent that have been found to have the same features of the Indus Valley Civilization such as - Harrapa, Mohenjodaro, Lothal, Banawali, Dholvira etc.
  • Art and Craft
  • The Citadel was located in the west, on an elevated position. It was occupied by the ruling class. The brick houses below were occupied by common people. The lower town followed a grid system. The houses were made of burnt bricks and they were of varying sizes. The drainage system was well planned.
  • Script
  • The land was very fertile due to the River Indus which carried alluvial soil. Toy models of ploughs indicate that agriculture was one of the main occupations in this civilization. They also domesticated oxen, goats, sheep, etc. Elephants were commonly found and cats and dogs were kept as pets.
  • Decline of the Harrapan Civilization
  • Copper and bronze were used to make vessels, ornaments, etc. The most famous bronze figurine discovered is the Dancing Girl. Ornaments and beads were made with precious metals and minerals. Seals were engraved with realistic figures. The terracotta figurines were made with earthen-baked clay.
  • The people of this civilization had developed a pictographic script. It has not been deciphered till date. There is limited information about the civilization until it will be deciphered.
  • There are a few reasons why the civilization began to decline around 1750 BCE: 1. Construction and town planning became more inefficient2. Decrease of fertile soil/Indus river changed course or dried up3. Due to extra population
