  • Christianity began in Judah. The early Christians shared the belief that Jesus was the Messiah, a savor sent by God. The early church developed a strong organization and hierarchy. This included bishops, deacons, and elders. The five bishops where known as Patriarchs. 
  • The conflict between the pope and the five patriarchs when the bishop of Rome claimed authority over Christians everywhere he called himself the pope. The pope said he had more power then the over Patriarchs and they became mad.

  • As Christianity grew, different groups began to argue about the nature of Jesus. In 325, bishops met and developed a statement of beliefs, or a creed.

  • An icon is a holy image, usually a portrait of Jesus or a saint. Early Christians argued over the use of icons. Many Christians displayed icons in their homes and churches. There were people that believed icons should not be used or worshiped. This was one of the differences between the Eastern and Western churches.
  • The Eastern Orthodox Church had a strong influence on the culture. The Byzantine emperor was the head of the church in the Eastern tradition. The Western tradition became known as the Roman Catholic Church. The pope was the head of the Catholic Church.

  • The final split. The two churches became different in many other areas. The language of the Eastern Orthodox Church was Greek and the Roman Catholic Church was Latin. Orthodox priests were allowed to marry and Catholic priests were not.
