Tommy was an ordinary 13 year old kid with a strong desire for basketball. He lived in New York and never had a dad. But his biggest fear was taking the last shot of the game, when everything is on the line.
Until one day, his mom got cancer and was told she had 6 months to live.
Crossing the Threshold
Tommy's mom, Sage, told Tommy," Tommy, basketball means everything to you, your father, and I, it would mean so much if you were to hit a buzzer beater for me." Tommy was shocked. He said back to his mom," No, I have to stay home and take care of you." "But you must,"said Sage,"for me." Then she went through the CT scan.
Keep your head. When the time comes, you will know how to handle it next time.
The next day he met up with his coach for lunch to discuss what happened to his mom. Tommy looked up to his coach, Austin, Tommy almost felt like his sidekick, a mentor. "My mom has cancer, but she still wants me to play." Tommy explained. Austin replied"That's tough, but if that's what she wants, then play like you never have before." Tommy agreed.
A week passes and Tommy meets his teammates, John, Nick, Conner, Vidal, and his best friend Luke. For as long as anyone can remember they've been best friends. Together they were a nearly unstoppable team. They've been practicing for the Junior National Basketball association for years. But today, the whole team was. The coach, Austin, names the team,"Backyard".
After months of training, they have the qualifier for the JNBA. The first and second place teams go on. Tommy and his team have been doing great and are going to the championship. The team they pushed and punched players behind the refs back. This team, the Black hawks, had become their enemies. with 5.3 seconds to go Luke takes the ball up and passes it to Tommy. 1 second left. Tommy wants to take the shot but can't cause of his fear of taking the last shot, so he passes and they loose .
