  • Mom Luby is an old woman who takes care of two children Elijah and Arlethia (puddin) because their mother passed away three years ago. She owns a speakeasy where people come to sit, eat, drink, talk and play games.
  • One day a social worker of the Department of Child Welfare, Beureau of family Assistance came knocking on the door because of the state aid mom Luby applied for. Her name is Miss Rushmore, a brownskin lady with straightened hair.
  • Miss Rushmore asked Mom Luby a bunch of questions about her and her children like how old she is and the conditions of the children. She also gave Mom luby instructions on where to go to fill out a lot of paperwork for the state aid.
  • Mom Luby is such a busy woman she is not able to do all that. First she has to deliver a baby. Then she has to go visit a sick old lady and work on her with some herbs. Then has to down to the courthouse to to get a young man out of jail and then has to go and preach a funeral. Miss Rushmore did not believe that Mom Luby could do all those things so she went along with her.
  • When they came back Miss Rushmore is lost. Mom Luby did all that in only two hours and she could not do that much in that much time. After all that she realized that mom Luby did not need her help.
  • Mom Luby sat her down in her speakeasy and poured her a drink of corn. Everyone started to laugh at the confused lady. They laughed so hard that they shook the room and laughed the social worker out the building.
