  • Wow! That instrument looks really cool- what is it?
  •  This is the Ancient Chinese Compass, also referred to as a “South Pointer”.
  • It was made by placing a lodestone spoon on a square of bronze. The handle of the spoon always pointed south.
  • The compass provided people with guidance through the Chinese characters and constellations on the square of bronze.
  • Other types of compasses were developed as well, paving the way for more instruments to navigate the seas! This changed the course of history!
  • The Ancient Chinese Compass dates back to sometime during the Han Dynasty (2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE). It was an important tool well into the 19th century.
  • It’s primary uses were for guidance and geomancy, to determine the best location and time for things such as burial. It was also used for locating buildings or fortuitous times and locations of for almost any enterprise.
  • Before the compass was used for navigation, there was another type of early compass used. It was a device that consisted of a wooden fish containing a magnetized needle placed in a bowl of water.
