  • Many people are leaving the Catholic Church and I do not understand why!
  • Well Pope, if you did not require indulgences for salvation maybe more people would be here!

  • The Protestant Reformation was when the Christian church in Europe split into Catholics and Protestants. Martin Luther began the split in 1517 when he presented the "95 Theses". The Church split because of differences of opinions dealing with indulgences. In 1520, Pope Leo X excommunicated Martin Luther after he refused to recant his statements.

  • The Protestant Reformation began after Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Castle Church in Germany. Many people began to go to newly formed Protestant Churches since they were "Protesting" the Catholic practice of indulgences. They also believed that people could have a direct relationship with God and did not need a priest or the Pope.

  • John Calvin was born in France and during the Protestant Reformation he created strict rules for Christians to live by. One example would be no consumption of alcohol. His ideas were popular and adopted in Switzerland. Calvin's followers are members of the modern day Presbyterian Church.
