  • Hello everyone! My name is Rachel Carson and I am a marine biologist! I was born in 1907 and I want to share my story!
  • I began working at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Washington DC as a writer and an editor as I was a marine scientist.
  • I also graduated from the Pennsylvania College for Women and then obtained a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University in Zoology for an MA. My main concern was that people are not being educated enough on nature and why certain chemicals are toxic to humans.
  • A fun thing I did was teach at the Dental and Pharmacy school at the University of Maryland. Shortly after I was awarded by MA degree. My main goal of my work was to write about nature to educate people on pesticides. After my death, they made a ban on certain pesticides that were harmful to humans which saved thousands of lives.
  • I was also honored by:The National Book Award for NonfictionThe John Burroughs Medal for Nature WritingThe Henry Grier Bryant Gold Medal of the Geographical SocietThe New York Zoological Society Gold MedalElection to the American Academy of Arts and LettersA Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for research on the tidal coasts in preparation for her next book, The Edge of the Sea.
  • My best accomplishment was that in 1980, President Jimmy Carter awarded me the Presidential Medal of Freedom due to my research of DDT and the side effects/consequences of using it.
