  • most immigrants That went through ellis island were from Europe but to get there they had to walk to a seaport which sometimes took days. Then they took a boat to Ellis island which took 2 weeks.
  • the registry room stop 5
  • The boat was dirty and crowded so when they reached Ellis islands they where mostly tired. When they saw the Statue of liberty they cheered at the symbol of America. Health officers went through the boat looking for any diseases starting with 1st and 2nd class but 3rd class had to wait hours or days until they where brought to ellis island.
  • The medical exam. stop 6
  • Officers motioned immigrants of the boats but it was a struggle because there where so many people. As the immigrants got of the boats the officers passed out numbered identity cards to everyone. With the identity cards the immigrants left their precious items in the baggage room until the inspection was over .
  • the legal inspection. stop 7
  • The registry room was called the great hall because of how large it was and some immigrants hadn't ever seen a room that large before. In the great hall there were metal railings keeping the line orderly. In 1903 they added wooden betches in line for the immigrants to sit on. officials decided if someone could go into the country right away or if they had to stay for more inspecting.
  • The doctors at ellis island created a systems to check for diseases. the first was called the six-second physical. immigrants would walk up stairs while doctors watched and looks for limping, if there eyes were red, and id they were short of breath. if someone was sick and could be cured they were sent the the ellis island hospital but if you couldn't be cured they sent you home.
  • When the immigrants got off the boats the crew of the boat gave officials a list of names and descriptions of people that were on the boat this was called a manifest. A uniformed official would ask the immigrants 29 questions to see if they could legally come to america an interpreter helped the communicate.
