Frederick Douglas was a black slave that grew up on a southern plantation in the early 1800s. He started out a slave in Maryland. Frederick was forced to work from sunup till the sun set, and not getting paid even a penny. Frederick never knew who his dad was and got separated from his mom when he was just a baby. He had many owners throughout his life, one being a cruel man, Mr. Covey. That man changed Frederick Douglass’s life forever.
On January the first 1833 Frederick Douglass left Master Thomas's house to go be a slave for Master Covey. It was the first time in his life he was going to go work in the field. The days went by 1 by 1 till Frederick Douglass had his first whippin. His back never went a day without being in pain or getting whipped. It was always a stinging pain when ever he got whipped. Master Covey use to whip Fredrick just for taking a little break without permission.
Frederick Douglass would have to wake up early everyday before the sun would even rise. Him and his slave buddies were always up and feeding the horses and headed to the field. There work day consisted of a 14 - 16 hour work day, up at sunrise and and going to sleep when the sun was completely down. That doesn't even count the hours they get for food break. It's not much, about 5 minutes to eat. By the end of the day all of the slaves including Fredrick where exhausted by the end of the day.
