- A young, college filled team of boys competed against the 4 time champions, Soviet Union. The U.S. won as underdogs overcame adversity to defeat the more powerful Soviets, showing their determination to represent America!
- The Cuban Missile Crisis was significant because it showed the Soviets giving the U.S. direct threats of Nuclear missiles attacking their lands. This standoff showed the intensity of the two sides and how close the U.S. was to getting hit. With good relations and negotiations, the Soviets decided to remove the missiles.
- The launch of Sputnik worried the U.S. incredibly because it showed them the advancements of the Soviets, they were now ahead of the U.S. when it came to modern technology. The U.S. was now in a hurry and was forced to begin to improve their space technology and try to regain their lead over the Soviets.
