- Brief periods of economic downturn are often inevitable. However, they may often become prolonged and may stick around longer than anticipated. Such periods are often referred to as recessions, which occur when there are two consecutive quarters of GDP decline.

- UNITED STATES ENTERS EIGHTH MONTH OF ECONOMIC RECESSION
- During prolonged periods of economic downturn, consumers begin to encounter more difficulties in fulfilling basic needs. This includes affording or finding food.

- I'm starving!
- I haven't eaten in two days!
- In such times of economic crisis, citizens often look towards the government for solutions. In many cases through American history, the government has preferred to do little to respond. A notable example includes the Hoover Administration's policies during the early stages of the Great Depression.
- We're going to ride this recession out! Everything will return back to normal soon!
- When the government is unable to remedy sustained economic downturn, the citizenry becomes agitated and discontent. Thus, citizens advocate for change through social, political, and economic means.
- INCREASE WELFARE BENEFITS!
- WHERE ARE THE JOBS?
- WE DEMAND STIMULUS!
- Eventually, when full discontent ensues, change is brought forth in the form of leadership and policy. In American history, politicians who preside over periods of economic struggle are often voted out of office and replaced by those with differing policies.
- President Gray has been defeated by Michael Green in a landslide.
- President-Elect Green's promise for a more active government was the catalyst for his victory over President Gray and his laissez-faire economic policies.
